Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent befalls Christians and they fast to purify themselves prior to Easter. Today is also known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras -- all these monickers are all tied in to the same ideal.
Basically, people would rush to use up all their eggs, milk, flour - anything and everything in their pantry before the advent of Lent & the upcoming days of starvation. If fasting is on the cards, you have to remove all temptations -- so eating the contents of your kitchen was the #1 priority. Funny enough, in old times many of these food items could heartily make up pancakes hence the alias for Shrove Tuesday is Pancake Tuesday. See where I'm going with this thing?! Hungry yet?
I'm not particularly religious but I do like a good pancake smothered in real honest to goodness maple syrup (typical Canadian, me). Any excuse to eat non-stop sounds good to me. Just be sure to wear your trousers with an elastic waist.

I didn't have any pancakes this year, I need my mum to make them for me. They just don't taste right when I do them.
I've also given up facebook for lent. Tough stuff.
